| A "Search Engine" is an automated search system using a "spider" to review your website. When an internet user types a search phrase into the search box, the search engine scans its database for words that match the users query. The search engines have unique "spiders" (algorithms) for the ranking of the pages contained in their databases and periodically send their "spiders" out to "crawl" for new and updated pages. There are four major search engines - Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask Jeeves. The minor ones, America Online, Lycos, Netscape, AltaVista, Fast / All the Web, Excite and Hotbot are fed results from one or more of the Big4. |
